Sydney’s storm season is upon us, and it brings heavy rain, strong winds, lightning and unexpected power outages. While the weather itself can be disruptive, storms can also put additional pressure on your home’s electrical system.
A power outage might seem like a temporary inconvenience, but storms can also contribute to power surges, electrical faults and damage to electrical equipment. Knowing what to look out for — and when to call a licensed electrician — can help keep your home and family safe.
Here’s what Sydney homeowners should know about electrical safety before, during and after a storm.
Storms are a familiar part of life in Sydney, particularly during the warmer months. In NSW, storm season officially runs from September to April, although severe weather can occur at any time of year.
Severe thunderstorms are the most common type of storm in NSW and can bring damaging winds, heavy rain, hail, lightning and flash flooding. In severe storms, wind gusts can reach 90 km/h or more — strong enough to bring down trees and powerlines and damage electricity infrastructure.
For Sydney homes, that can mean anything from a brief interruption to an extended power outage, particularly when fallen trees, damaged powerlines or flooding affect the electricity network.
But losing power isn’t the only electrical concern. NSW SES also warns that storms can cause power surges, putting sensitive appliances and electronics at risk. Water entering electrical equipment, wiring or switchboards can create further hazards during heavy rain and flooding.
That’s why electrical safety during Sydney’s storm season is about more than waiting for the lights to come back on. Understanding the risks — and preparing your home before severe weather arrives — can help protect your family, your appliances and your electrical system.
If your home loses power during a Sydney storm, your first priority should always be to ensure everyone is safe.
Use torches or battery-powered lighting where possible and avoid interfering with your switchboard, wiring or other electrical equipment if you’re unsure what has caused the outage.
If the storm has brought down trees or powerlines nearby, stay well clear. NSW SES advises people to always treat fallen powerlines as live and stay at least 8 metres away, or roughly two car lengths. Never touch a fallen powerline or anything that may be in contact with it.
It’s also worth checking whether the outage is affecting your home alone or the surrounding area. If neighbouring properties still have power but yours doesn’t, there may be an electrical fault within your property that requires professional attention.
Be particularly cautious if there has been flooding, a roof leak or other water ingress. If water may have reached electrical equipment, power points, wiring or your switchboard, don’t attempt to inspect or repair it yourself. Keep away from the affected area and contact a licensed electrician.
The same applies if you notice sparking, unusual smells, visible damage or anything else that suggests an electrical fault.
When severe weather and electricity are involved, it’s always better to put safety first and leave electrical repairs to a licensed professional.
Power outages in a home are always a cause for some concern, but in Sydney, there’s another factor homeowners should consider: the age and condition of the electrical system behind the walls.
Many of Sydney’s established suburbs have older homes, and it’s not uncommon for electricians to come across ageing electrical infrastructure, older switchboards and, in some properties, original or older-style wiring such as cloth-insulated wiring.
Over the years, these homes may also have had renovations, extensions and electrical additions completed at different times. Meanwhile, the demands we place on our electrical systems have changed dramatically, with everything from air conditioning and induction cooking to home offices, entertainment systems, security and smart home technology now relying on them.
That’s why preparing for storm season shouldn’t only be about protecting the latest television or computer. It’s also worth understanding the condition of the electrical system supplying your home
A power surge is a sudden increase in electrical voltage that can potentially damage connected appliances and sensitive electronics. Power surge protection can help provide an additional layer of protection for the equipment throughout your home.
Rather than relying solely on individual plug-in devices, homeowners can speak with a licensed electrician about the appropriate surge protection for their property and whether their existing switchboard and electrical system are suitable for the demands of the home.
If you live in an older Sydney property and you’re unsure what wiring, switchboard or surge protection is currently in place, an electrical safety inspection is a sensible place to start. It gives a licensed electrician the opportunity to assess the existing system and identify any areas that may require further attention.
Once the storm has passed and power has been restored, don’t assume everything is fine simply because the lights are back on.
Pay attention to anything that seems different. Flickering lights, circuits that repeatedly trip, unusual sounds or smells, damaged power points or appliances that aren’t operating as they normally would can all be signs that something needs further investigation.
Water is particularly important. If heavy rain, flooding or a roof leak may have reached electrical wiring, power points, appliances or your switchboard, don’t attempt to inspect or repair the affected equipment yourself. Keep clear and have it assessed by a licensed electrician.
Not every electrical fault is immediately obvious, particularly after severe weather. If you have any concerns about your home’s electrical system following a storm or power outage, having it professionally checked can give you a clearer understanding of its condition.
You can’t control Sydney’s weather, but you can make sure your home’s electrical system is as prepared as possible for it!
For older Sydney homes in particular, preventative electrical maintenance can help identify ageing wiring, older switchboards, previous electrical additions and other issues that may need attention. It’s also an opportunity to understand what surge protection you already have in place and whether it’s appropriate for your home.
If you’re unsure about the condition of your electrical system, don’t wait for the next storm or power outage to find out.
